The Nigeria Police in Zaria have cautioned politicians and their supporters against the misuse of social media ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Area Commander, ACP Abdurrahman Idris, gave the warning while receiving members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zaria Unit, on a courtesy visit. He expressed concern over the use of social media handlers allegedly employed by some political actors to spread inflammatory content.
According to him, such activities could fuel misinformation, cyberbullying, threats and other forms of cyber-related offences capable of disturbing public peace.
He urged politicians to avoid actions that could heighten tension, while reaffirming the police commitment to enforcing laws against cybercrime. The NUJ also called for stronger collaboration with security agencies to promote peaceful and credible elections.
