NIGERIA MOVES TO PROTECT LOCAL BREEDS, BOOST LIVESTOCK FUTURE

Listen

The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project is stepping up efforts to protect and maximise Nigeria’s indigenous animal genetic resources.

Speaking in Abuja, National Coordinator Sanusi Abubakar said the push is key to improving livestock productivity, tackling climate challenges, and strengthening food security.

The plan? Get serious about tracking and understanding local breeds—what they are, where they exist, and how they’re changing over time.

Backed by global standards from the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the initiative focuses on:

  • Identifying and studying livestock traits
  • Building reliable data systems
  • Monitoring risks to prevent extinction

Why it matters: Nigeria’s livestock data is currently scattered and inconsistent, making planning and investment difficult.

Now, stakeholders are working to standardise systems, build a national database, and support smarter breeding and conservation strategies.
