The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recovered dangerous explosive materials inside the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, preventing what officials say could have been a major disaster.
Police spokesperson Timfom John said the operation followed credible intelligence from correctional authorities.
Acting on the tip-off, Commissioner of Police Baba Azare deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, which uncovered two high-explosive rounds, a burning fuse, and other tools.
The devices were safely neutralised—no casualties recorded.
Security has now been tightened around the facility, while investigations continue to track those behind the plot.
