BENUE SITTING ON “AGRIC GOLDMINE” — EXPERT URGES STATE TO CASH IN

Listen

A former president of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, Charles Ibe, is urging the Benue Government to stop relying heavily on federal allocations and fully tap into its rich agricultural and livestock resources.

Speaking in Makurdi during World Veterinary Day events, Ibe described the state as a “goldmine” of crops like soybeans, sorghum, millet, and cassava adding that its soybean oil stands out for its health benefits.

His message: build a strong agro-based economy, and the revenue will follow.

He stressed that livestock development—backed by solid veterinary services—is key to sustainable growth, while also pointing to Benue’s border with Cameroon as a major trade opportunity.

Beyond farming, Ibe pushed for modern solutions like sniffer dogs to boost security, and urged farmers to adopt improved crop varieties from International Institute of Tropical Agriculture to cut post-harvest losses and avoid harmful chemicals.
