UN SOUNDS ALARM ON MEXICO: PROTECT JOURNALISTS, END DISAPPEARANCES

Listen

The United Nations is calling out Mexico over rising threats to journalists and a deepening disappearance crisis.

UN human rights chief Volker Türk says violence—driven by organised crime, arms flow, and corruption—continues to endanger reporters and human rights defenders, especially those exposing sensitive issues.

He’s urging authorities to end impunity, strengthen investigations, and protect those on the frontlines of truth.

A major concern? Disappearances. Türk describes it as one of Mexico’s most painful human rights challenges, with families—many led by women—risking their lives to search for missing loved ones.

He also flagged rising gender-based violence and femicides, calling the situation deeply troubling.

While acknowledging reforms and Mexico’s existing protection programme for journalists, the UN says more must be done—faster, stronger, and more effectively.
