If your hotel isn’t registered, it may soon be checking out—for good.
The Nigeria Hotel Association (NHA) has warned that it will begin clamping down on and shutting down unregistered hotels across the country, citing security risks and industry reputation concerns.
NHA President, Eze Patrick Anyanwu, issued the warning in Owerri during a meeting with state chairmen, saying some unregistered facilities have become safe havens for criminal activity, worsening insecurity nationwide.
He urged hotel owners to register with the association or risk enforcement action, stressing that the hospitality sector is too important to be left unregulated.
According to him, hotels that refuse compliance will face penalties and possible closure as part of efforts to “sanitize” the industry.
Anyanwu also called on government to provide financial support for hoteliers, lamenting multiple taxation and what he described as regulatory overreach affecting the sector’s growth.
He, however, praised government efforts in promoting tourism but warned that recent regulatory actions, including those tied to hospitality oversight, must align with existing laws and not intimidate operators.
The association insists stronger cooperation between government and stakeholders is key to protecting jobs, boosting tourism, and improving national security.
