A security expert Olaniyi Daniel has raised concerns over the ripple effects of rape allegations later found to be false, warning they can undermine justice for genuine survivors.
Speaking in Lagos, Daniel said while false claims are relatively rare, their impact is serious—affecting both the wrongly accused and real victims who may struggle to be believed.
His comments follow recent incidents in Osun and Ogun States where individuals admitted to making false rape claims after investigations.
According to him, such cases can erode public confidence, discourage victims from speaking up, and even lead to reputational damage or wrongful detention for the accused.
Daniel stressed the need for thorough, fair, and evidence-based investigations, urging law enforcement to balance victim protection with due process.
He also called for better training, improved investigative tools, and the use of technology to strengthen evidence gathering.
On the role of the public, he warned against rushing to judgment—especially on social media—while advocating stricter penalties for false accusations.
At the same time, he emphasised continued support for genuine victims, noting that justice must protect both survivors and the innocent.
