COW PRICES RISE TO N2.5M IN LAGOS, BUTCHERS RAISE CONCERN

Listen

The cost of cattle in Lagos has surged sharply, putting pressure on both traders and consumers.

The Lagos State Butchers Association says the price of cows has increased to about N2.5 million, up from around N1.7 million in 2025.

The association attributed the rise to insecurity, high transportation costs, and delays in local ranching programmes, which have affected supply especially from northern Nigeria.

Its Patron, Alhaji Bamidele Kazeem, said cows that previously sold for about N1 million are now scarce, while most available ones sell above N2 million.

He explained that increased fuel prices have driven up logistics costs, making cattle transportation more expensive and contributing to the price hike.

Kazeem added that local production has not improved due to delays in planned ranching and feedlot projects in Lagos.

The association urged government to fast-track ranching initiatives, particularly the Eko Ranch project in Epe, to boost local supply and reduce reliance on external sources.
