WASTE CRISIS ALERT: EXPERTS DEMAND SKILLS SHAKE-UP IN CONSTRUCTION SECTOR

Listen

From building collapses to demolition debris, Nigeria’s waste problem is piling up—and experts say we’re not ready.

The Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria is calling for urgent reforms to tackle growing gaps in construction and demolition waste management across the country.

AWAMN President Olugbenga Adebola says Nigeria lacks the technical skills and structured systems needed to handle what experts now call CDDW—construction, demolition and disaster waste.

Speaking after a workshop organised by Lagos Waste Management Authority and the European Union, Adebola warned that frequent building collapses—especially in Lagos—are worsening the waste burden.

His solution? Training, partnerships and a full industry reset.

AWAMN is now pushing for a national framework, including a new Waste Management Resource Centre and a standard curriculum to professionalise the sector.

The goal: move Nigeria from a “dump-and-forget” system to a circular economy where waste becomes value.

Without skilled hands and clear systems, Nigeria’s waste problem could keep building—literally.
