What should have been a routine journey ended in terror — police say 14 passengers, mostly JAMB candidates, were kidnapped en route to Otukpo.

Makurdi, April 16, 2026 — The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of 14 passengers travelling on a Benue Links bus, mostly candidates heading for their JAMB examinations.

Commissioner of Police, Mr Ifeanyi Emenari, said the attack occurred Wednesday night along the Makurdi–Otukpo route when armed hoodlums intercepted the vehicle.

He disclosed that one passenger managed to escape, while security operatives have launched a rescue operation in the area.

“I’m on ground in Otukpo with my team. DPOs are already in the bush as we intensify efforts to rescue the victims,” he said.

The CP noted that the transport company typically avoids night travel, raising questions about why the journey was undertaken after hours.

He assured that investigations are ongoing while security forces work to secure the safe return of the abducted passengers.
