From handshake diplomacy to billion-naira opportunities — Nigeria and Mexico are celebrating half a century of steady international “situationship done right.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria says it’s rolling out plans to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations with Mexico — a partnership that has quietly matured into a global cooperation story.
According to spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, the relationship officially kicked off on April 14, 1976, and has since grown from polite diplomacy into a full-on multi-sector collaboration.
Think trade, energy, agriculture, education, culture — and even new frontiers like renewable energy and industrial development. Basically, no sector left behind.
Both countries have also kept things solid on the global stage, frequently aligning within the United Nations on issues like peace, development, and international cooperation.
Ebienfa noted that the next phase of the relationship will lean even more on economic diplomacy — with stronger private sector involvement and expanded trade opportunities, more business, more exchange, more collaboration.
The ministry says it’s proud of how far the partnership has come — but even more excited about where it’s headed next.
