FROM BOOTS TO BYTES: IGP PUSHES TECH-DRIVEN SECURITY STRATEGY

Listen to the story

Guns and manpower alone won’t cut it anymore, Nigeria’s security chiefs say it’s time to go digital.

Nigeria’s fight against insecurity may soon rely less on boots on the ground and more on brains and bytes.

The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, alongside security experts, is calling for a major shift toward technology-driven policing — think drones, CCTV, and real-time intelligence.

The push came during a ceremony celebrating security expert Peter Olumuji, who just bagged a PhD in Security and Strategic Studies from Nasarawa State University.

Olumuji, who works with the FCT’s Command and Control Centre, highlighted how tech tools are already helping track and analyse threats faster — and more safely.

The message from the top? Less reliance on sheer manpower, more investment in smart systems that reduce risks for officers and improve response time.

Experts also stressed the need for well-trained, highly educated personnel who can actually operate and manage these advanced tools effectively.

Nigeria’s security strategy is evolving — from muscle to mind, and from manpower to modern tech.
