Prof. Taiwo Obindo, President of the Association of Psychiatrists of Nigeria, called on the National Health Insurance Authority to include mental health diagnoses and treatments in its benefit package. Ahead of World Mental Health Day, he stressed this would reduce out-of-pocket costs and improve access.
Obindo also advocated for mental health integration into primary healthcare, dedicated government funding, and decriminalizing attempted suicide to support those in need amidst rising mental health challenges linked to crises in Nigeria.
