NIGERIA MOURNS DR. CHRISTOPHER KOLADE: THE GENTLEMAN OF INTEGRITY BOWS OUT AT 92

He lived with quiet dignity, led with grace, and taught generations that integrity is not old-fashioned — it’s eternal. Dr. Christopher Kolade, diplomat, broadcaster, scholar, and business statesman, has taken his final bow, leaving behind a legacy that Nigeria may never fully replace.
In October 2025, Nigeria lost one of its finest minds and most revered moral compasses. Dr. Christopher Kolade, who passed away at the age of 92, was more than a name in the nation’s history — he was a standard of integrity, excellence, and decency in public life.
Born on December 28, 1932, in Erin-Oke, Osun State, Dr. Kolade’s story began in the modest home of an Anglican missionary. That early upbringing shaped his lifelong devotion to service, discipline, and ethical leadership.
A Voice That Helped Shape a Nation
Dr. Kolade’s illustrious career began in the classroom, serving as a colonial-era Education Officer after graduating from Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone, in the 1950s. But it was in broadcasting that his voice — calm, firm, and principled — would echo across a young nation finding its identity.
From Nigeria’s independence in 1960 until 1978, he played a defining role in national broadcasting, rising through the ranks to become Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). Under his stewardship, the NBC was more than a news service — it was a tool for nation-building.
Business Leadership with a Moral Compass
When Dr. Kolade transitioned into the corporate world, he carried his values with him. At Cadbury Nigeria Plc, where he served as Chief Executive Officer and later Chairman, he ushered in what many remember as a golden era. He championed corporate governance, transparency, and ethical leadership long before they became buzzwords.
His name became synonymous with business integrity. Through the Integrity Organization Ltd and The Convention on Business Integrity, he fought tirelessly for accountability in both public and private sectors — proving that success need not come at the expense of one’s soul.
Diplomat, Teacher, Mentor
In the early 2000s, Kolade carried his grace and intellect abroad as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (2002–2007), where he restored confidence and respect for Nigeria’s image on the global stage.
Retirement didn’t slow him down. He poured his energy into academia, teaching Corporate Governance and Leadership at Lagos Business School and serving as Pro-Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University. Later, as Chancellor of McPherson University, he inspired young Nigerians to lead with conscience and courage.
A Lifetime of Honours and Service
Dr. Kolade’s contributions spanned continents and sectors. His leadership résumé reads like a chronicle of service:

  • Director-General, Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation
  • CEO and Chairman, Cadbury Nigeria Plc
  • High Commissioner, Nigeria to the UK
  • President, Nigerian Institute of Management (1985–1988)
  • President, Institute of Personnel Management (1988–1993)
  • Chairman, Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) Board
  • Chairman, SystemSpecs Ltd, CSS Bookshop, and Cornerstone Insurance
His numerous honors and awards include:

  • Lay Canon of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Guildford
  • Hallmarks of Labour Award for Leadership and Corporate Governance

    A Life of Quiet Greatness
Those who knew Dr. Kolade describe him as a man who led by example — never loud, never brash, but always firm in his convictions. He believed that leadership was service, that success must be shared, and that character was a man’s greatest asset.
His passing marks the end of an era — but his principles, teachings, and example will remain guiding lights for generations of Nigerians who yearn for integrity in public and private life.
As Nigeria mourns this remarkable statesman, one thing is clear: Dr. Christopher Kolade didn’t just live well — he lived right.
