LASSA FEVER DEATHS SOAR: ONDO & BAUCHI AT THE EPICENTRE

Nigeria is facing a tough battle as Lassa fever claims 145 lives this year, with Ondo and Bauchi states leading in fatalities. Over 780 people have tested positive amid nearly 6,000 suspected cases across 20 states.
Ondo tops the list with 31% of infections, followed by Bauchi (24%) and Edo (17%). The death rate has edged up to 18.6%, partly because many mistake early symptoms for malaria or typhoid and delay seeking help.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is on high alert, boosting surveillance, training health workers, and partnering with WHO and UNICEF to contain the outbreak. They urge everyone to keep food safe, maintain clean, rodent-free surroundings, and seek medical care immediately if symptoms like high fever or bleeding appear.
As one Bauchi farmer sadly put it, “It started like a fever, and before we knew it, my brother began vomiting blood.”
Stay vigilant—Lassa fever doesn’t wait!
