The President of Halal Children’s Home, Ramatu Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to open their homes to orphaned and vulnerable children through fostering, saying family care can provide them with a better future. She made the appeal on Saturday, November 7, 2026, in Abuja during the organisation’s annual awareness walk to mark World Adoption Day.
Abubakar said the walk was aimed at raising awareness about children growing up without parental care and encouraging Nigerians to turn their compassion into action. She noted that government alone could not meet the needs of all vulnerable children, urging individuals and communities to complement official efforts by providing care and support.
Guest speaker, Mr Shuaib Mustapha, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said the plight of vulnerable children required stronger parental responsibility and government intervention. He also urged religious leaders to promote responsible child upbringing and called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to strengthen efforts against drug supply and abuse among young people.
The home’s Welfare Officer, Khadijah Fashina, disclosed that the organisation operated in Abuja, Lagos and Kaduna, with plans to expand into three additional geopolitical zones within five years. She said the home had about 60 children in Abuja, 40 in Lagos and 30 in Kaduna, adding that children from different schools participated in the awareness walk.
Two beneficiaries, Muhammad Abdullahi and Bilkisu Abdusalam, expressed gratitude for the care and support they had received. Abdullahi, who joined the home in 2018 and is now in his final year studying Political Science and International Relations at the University of Abuja, said the support of the home and its donors had helped him pursue his academic ambitions.
