TAX OMBUD RESOLVES 25 OF 33 COMPLAINTS RECEIVED

The Office of the Tax Ombud has resolved 25 of the 33 complaints it has received since commencing operations, its Chief Executive Officer, Dr John Nwabueze, has disclosed. He said the office was expanding public awareness and improving access to its services to strengthen tax dispute resolution across Nigeria.

Nwabueze made the disclosure at the Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) Fourth Quarter 2026 Breakfast Meeting in Abuja on Friday, November 6, 2026. He said the office planned to use television, print media and outdoor advertising to publicise its mandate, while discussions were ongoing with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) to extend its services nationwide, particularly to taxpayers in rural communities.

The CEO also disclosed plans to establish six regional offices across the country by December, alongside desk offices in about 16 revenue and tax institutions. He said the proposed offices would improve communication between the Tax Ombud and tax authorities, helping to address delays in correspondence that had affected the stipulated 14-day complaint resolution timeline. The expansion would involve recruitment, infrastructure provision and securing necessary approvals.

Nwabueze said complaints received so far included delayed tax assessments and disagreements over assessments issued to taxpayers. He explained that the office gave both taxpayers and relevant tax authorities an opportunity to present their positions before decisions were reached, in a bid to promote impartial resolution and reduce costly court proceedings.

The Tax Ombud chief urged Nigerians to support the office and commended those who had submitted complaints, saying their confidence would encourage improved service delivery.
