NIMC ARRESTS SUSPECTED ILLEGAL NIN OPERATORS IN ABUJA, SEIZES EQUIPMENT

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested several suspected illegal National Identification Number (NIN) operators in Abuja and seized equipment allegedly used for unauthorised enrolment, data manipulation and extortion.

The enforcement operation, carried out by the commission’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU), covered Gwagwalada and other locations in the Federal Capital Territory. NIMC Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, November 2, 2026, saying the exercise was part of efforts to protect the integrity and security of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.

The commission warned Nigerians against patronising individuals or organisations operating outside its approved enrolment channels, stressing that NIN registration must be conducted only at designated NIMC centres. It also said requests for modification of personal information should be processed through its official self-service platform.

NIMC further encouraged Nigerians to download the NINAuth application from the Google Play Store or iOS App Store to strengthen the security of their identity records, print NIN slips and access other identity-related services. The commission said attempts to bypass established procedures often contribute to difficulties experienced by NIN holders.

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reaffirmed the commission’s zero-tolerance policy towards extortion, illegal operations and professional misconduct. She urged applicants and existing NIN holders to use approved service channels and obtain reliable information through NIMC’s official website and verified social media platforms.
