Listen

The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) has arrested some traders at Singer Market for allegedly altering the expiry dates of expired milk products in an attempt to resell them to unsuspecting consumers.

The Director in charge of Enforcement Operations, Alhaji Auwalu Muhammad, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, November 2, 2026, by the council’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Jamilu Mustapha. He said the operation followed a distress call from the Vice-Chairman of the Singer Market Traders’ Association, Aminu Umar-Dogara, prompting the deployment of enforcement officers to the market.

Muhammad said the suspected traders were apprehended and the shops allegedly involved in the practice were sealed. He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to preventing the sale of expired, adulterated and substandard products, as well as the unlawful alteration of product labels, expiry dates and quality standards.

The Executive Secretary of the council, Dr Ibrahim Garba-Muhammad, said the agency would not tolerate practices that violate consumer rights or endanger public health. He warned that anyone found engaging in such activities would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Garba-Muhammad commended the Singer Market Traders’ Association for its cooperation, stressing that sustained collaboration between market associations and the council was important in protecting consumers and safeguarding public health.
