LAGOS RESIDENTS SEEK STRICTER SANITATION ENFORCEMENT, IMPROVED WASTE MANAGEMENT

Listen

Residents in parts of Lagos have called for stricter enforcement of environmental sanitation regulations, regular refuse evacuation and improved waste disposal facilities to tackle indiscriminate dumping, blocked drains and flooding risks.

The residents made the appeal in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, October 31, 2026, during the October environmental sanitation exercise. They identified poor public participation, rising waste collection costs and inadequate drainage infrastructure as major challenges affecting environmental cleanliness.

On Apapa Road, residents and traders highlighted delays in refuse evacuation and insufficient public waste bins. In Mushin, residents of Rasaki and Adeoye streets identified irregular waste collection, inadequate disposal facilities and poor drainage as persistent problems. Meanwhile, on College Road, Ogba, residents attributed limited participation in the exercise partly to the hot weather, saying outdoor cleaning was uncomfortable without electricity to power fans.

Across the locations, NAN observed varying levels of participation, with sanitation officers monitoring compliance and encouraging residents and traders to take part. The exercise highlighted the need for stronger community involvement, improved waste management services and sustained government intervention.
