INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD: CLERIC URGES GIRLS TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST SEXUAL ABUSE

Listen

A pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Solution Center, Ibadan, Mrs Oluronke Esan, has urged girls to break the culture of silence surrounding sexual abuse and seek help when their safety or dignity is threatened. She gave the advice on Sunday to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11.

Esan described girls as valuable and deserving of care, respect and protection, urging them to maintain their self-worth and build positive character. She also encouraged them to seek guidance from trusted mentors and report sexual abuse rather than suffer in silence.

The cleric called on parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s safety, advising them to remain vigilant about their living arrangements and interactions within the home. She urged mothers to serve as trusted mentors and confidants to their daughters, providing guidance and support as they grow.

Addressing marital relationships, Esan cited Ephesians 5:22–25, stressing that love and care should underpin the relationship between husbands and wives. She condemned domestic violence, noting that husbands should not expect submission from their wives while subjecting them to abuse. The International Day of the Girl Child is a United Nations observance that promotes girls’ rights and highlights the challenges they face worldwide.
