Ghana’s Black Sharks defeated Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles 5–4 on penalties after a thrilling 4–4 draw in the first leg of their 2026 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The match was played on Saturday, October 10, at Murtala Square in Kaduna, leaving Ghana with an advantage ahead of next week’s return leg in Accra.

Ghana’s head coach, Daniel Kotey, described both teams as long-standing rivals who share mutual respect. He said his players were confident of winning in Nigeria and had prepared adequately for the encounter. Kotey also commended the match officials, expressing hope that the same standard of officiating would be maintained during the second leg in Ghana.

Nigeria’s assistant coach, Kakari Christopher, said the team had worked hard but failed to secure victory. He expressed confidence that the Super Sand Eagles could turn the tie around in Accra, adding that the technical crew would address defensive weaknesses and improve the team’s preparation. Christopher also noted that Nigeria failed to make sufficient use of its free-kick opportunities.

Ghana’s team manager, Djidodo Reuben, described the victory as important but stressed that the qualification contest was not over. He said the Black Sharks would seek to capitalise on home advantage in Accra as they pursue a place at the continental championship. Ghana captain Alexander Adjei also acknowledged his familiarity with Nigerian players, having faced them in previous competitions.

Both teams will now prepare for the decisive second leg in Accra next week, with Nigeria needing a strong performance to keep its qualification hopes alive.
