The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has dissociated itself from the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), urging secondary school teachers to resume normal duties and parents to send their children back to school.
ASUSS FCT Chairman, Mr Julius Ogundiran, said in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, October 7, that the union took the decision after an emergency State Executive Council meeting. He described the strike as premature and potentially harmful to the academic progress of students across the territory.
Ogundiran argued that the major grievances raised by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) did not justify industrial action at this time. He said the vacancy requirement for teachers’ promotion remained an established provision under the Public Service Rules, while the issue involving teachers excluded from the 2025 promotion examination had already received administrative attention.
He also said the redeployment of some education directors was within management’s administrative powers and warned that the strike could disrupt the forthcoming 2025/2026 promotion examinations for eligible FCT education officers.
Ogundiran directed ASUSS members to report for their scheduled assessments and appealed to parents and guardians to allow their children and wards to resume normal school activities.
