The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, is scheduled to enter spiritual seclusion on October 7 as part of preparations for the 2026 Onitsha Ofala Festival, slated for October 16 and 17.
Chief Mike Areh, Chairman of the Ofala Steering Committee, disclosed this in a statement in Awka, saying this year’s festival is themed “Igba Mbo, Iga N’Iru”, translated as “Strive, Advance.” He said the traditional ruler would spend four days in seclusion, during which he would, according to the tradition, commune with and seek the fortunes of the kingdom from the ancestors.
Areh said the 2026 edition marked a significant milestone in the evolution of Ofala from a sacred rite of renewal for the Obi into a platform for collective progress among the people of Onitsha. He said the Ogbalido feast would hold on October 10, followed by the Obi’s ceremonial emergence from seclusion on October 11 and a community medical outreach on October 12. Other activities include the Oreze Art Exhibition and a youth carnival celebrating music, dance, fashion and talent.
He said Iru Ofala, the festival’s high point, would hold on October 16, featuring the Obi’s first public appearance after seclusion, blessings and homage, while Azu Ofala would take place on October 17 with cultural performances, masquerades and community engagement at Ime Obi. A thanksgiving service is scheduled for October 25 at Bishop Crowder Memorial Anglican Church, Onitsha.
Areh also appreciated Globacom, Orijin and the festival’s media partners for supporting the event and promoting Onitsha’s cultural heritage.
