Vice President Kashim Shettima will on Thursday, Sept. 24, declare open the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in Enugu, with more than 500 editors and other stakeholders expected to attend.
The two-day conference, holding at The Dome, International Conference Centre, Enugu, will focus on the theme, “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” and the sub-theme, “When Lies Look Real: Detecting and Debunking AI Disinformation Before, During and After Election.” Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah is also expected to address participants.
The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, will chair the conference, while former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, will deliver the keynote address. Other speakers include Professor Auwal Yadudu, former NBA President Afam Osigwe, journalists Martins Oloja and Owei Lakemfa, Professor Chinyere Okunna, Dr Richard Okoye and Professor Farooq Kperogi.
Discussions will cover electoral justice, election petitions and BVAS, terrorism reporting, election security, press professionalism, journalists’ wellbeing, and the detection of AI-generated disinformation. The second day will also feature an executive session involving editors, governors, political party leaders and heads of government agencies on national issues.
The NGE said the conference would provide a platform to examine challenges confronting democracy, strengthen responsible journalism, promote credible elections and rebuild public trust. The Guild said the event is supported by the Enugu State Government, UNESCO, Craneburg, NNPC, Zenith Bank, NCC and others.
