The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged its officials to uphold professionalism and provide accurate information to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ondo State, Dr Mutiu Agboke, gave the charge on Friday, September 18, in Akure at a one-day capacity-building workshop for Voter Education Desk Officers and Assistant Electoral Officers from Ondo, Osun and Ekiti states.
Agboke said effective voter education was critical to tackling voter apathy, misinformation and misconceptions about elections. He urged officers to engage citizens in simple and accessible language, while ensuring that young voters, women, persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons, older citizens, first-time voters and people in remote communities were reached.
He also advised the officers to listen to citizens, address their concerns and provide information based on official INEC guidelines rather than personal opinions. The Head of Voter Education and Publicity in Ondo, Mr Olayinka Ogunseye, said the workshop was designed to strengthen the officers’ skills and professionalism in planning and delivering voter education.
Participants at the workshop, including Adekunle Ganiyu of Osun and Temitope Akinwunmi of Ekiti, said the training had enhanced their capacity and pledged to intensify voter awareness efforts in their respective communities ahead of the 2027 polls.
