The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued a high flood risk alert for 15 states from Sept. 19 to Sept. 25, warning of rising river levels and increased risk of riverine flooding.
The affected states are Imo, Cross River, Ebonyi, Benue, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Rivers, Edo, Kogi, Taraba, Delta, Bayelsa, Enugu and Abia. NiHSA Director-General, Umar Mohammed, said nine river stations require close monitoring, including Obubra, Itigidi and Epento on the Cross River.
Mohammed urged state and local governments, emergency agencies, traditional institutions and community leaders to activate early-warning systems and take precautionary measures. Residents in flood-prone areas were advised to move people, livestock and valuables to safer, higher ground where necessary.
He also warned residents against crossing flooded roads, bridges or fast-moving water and urged authorities to prepare shelters and relief materials. Communities were advised to clear blocked drainage channels where safe and follow official flood advisories as NiHSA continues monitoring river levels and hydrological conditions.
