Listen

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, opened their WAFU-U17 Women’s Tournament campaign in style with a commanding 5-0 victory over Niger Republic in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, on Wednesday, September 16.

Captain Harmony Chidi opened the scoring in the 16th minute before Awawu Bashiru doubled Nigeria’s advantage before half-time. Despite their dominance, the Flamingos had to wait until the 83rd minute for their third goal, scored by Ohunene Sunday.

Olubebube Umejiaku quickly added Nigeria’s fourth goal, while Ayomide Rotimi completed the rout in stoppage time to seal a convincing opening-day victory for the Hakeem Busari-led side, who won the previous edition of the competition.

The Flamingos will face Ghana’s Princesses on Saturday in their next Group B encounter. Nigeria and Ghana are among the four African teams that have qualified for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, scheduled for October.
