The Kwara State Government, on Thursday September 17, rescued 30 children aged between two and 15 from an unapproved orphanage in Ilorin and commenced their assessment, rehabilitation and family tracing.
Officials of the Ministry of Social Development rescued the boys and girls from Iranlowo Oluwa Orphanage and Children’s Home after discovering irregularities and concerns about their welfare and living conditions. The children have since been moved to a government-approved shelter where they are receiving medical care, psychosocial support, nutrition and other essential services.
Commissioner for Social Development, Hajiya Mariam Nnfatima Imam, said the intervention was aimed at protecting the children’s rights and welfare while addressing their immediate and long-term needs. She said authorities were tracing their families for possible reunification, while children who cannot be safely reunited would be considered for placement in approved care facilities after proper assessment and documentation.
Imam directed all orphanages and child-care institutions in the state to obtain proper registration and approval from the ministry. She also directed approved facilities to display “Approved by the Kwara State Government” on their signposts to help the public identify legitimate centres.
