KENYA TO MAKE HISTORY AS FIRST AFRICAN HOST OF WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Kenya has won the bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, making it the first African country to stage the global athletics showpiece.

World Athletics, on Tuesday September 15, announced Nairobi as the host following its 242nd Council Meeting in Budapest, Hungary. Munich, Germany, was selected to host the 2031 edition, with the two cities emerging from four competing bids for the championships.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said the quality and ambition of the bids made the decision difficult, but described Nairobi’s proposal as compelling. He said Kenya’s status as one of the world’s leading athletics nations made the country a fitting host and described bringing the championships to Africa for the first time as a historic moment.

The 2029 event will mark the first time the flagship World Athletics Championships is held on African soil. The decision is also a major opportunity for Nairobi to showcase Kenya’s athletics heritage and strengthen Africa’s presence on the global athletics stage, before the championships move to Munich in 2031.
