The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has condemned the recent killings of two Nigerian nationals, Bishop Michael Fakunle and Mr James Nwankwo, in Johannesburg, South Africa, calling for thorough investigations and justice.
NUSA National Publicity Secretary, Mr Akindele Olunloyo, said allegations surrounding the deaths, including threats, torture and police brutality, must be treated with seriousness. He urged South African authorities to intensify investigations and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
Olunloyo reaffirmed NUSA’s commitment to protecting the safety and welfare of Nigerians in South Africa, while urging members of the community to remain vigilant, law-abiding and united. He also encouraged Nigerians seeking voluntary repatriation to follow the screening and clearance procedures organised by the Nigerian High Commission and Consulate General.
Meanwhile, NUSA commended the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) for providing 500 one-way tickets to support the voluntary repatriation of stranded Nigerians in South Africa. Olunloyo said the gesture, approved by RCCG General Overseer Pastor Enoch Adeboye, would assist vulnerable Nigerians facing difficulties abroad.
He also backed the National Assembly’s decision to suspend official visits to South Africa and boycott South African-hosted legislative activities, describing the move as a demonstration of Nigeria’s seriousness about reported xenophobic attacks and hostility towards Nigerians and other Africans.
