President Bola Tinubu has called for an urgent overhaul of the global governance structure and international financial institutions to make them more representative, equitable and responsive to current economic and demographic realities.
Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, made the call on Sunday, September 13, at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, where Nigeria participated as a BRICS Partner Country. He said Nigeria supported reforms to institutions, including the United Nations Security Council and the international financial system.
The President urged BRICS countries and investors to move from commitments to measurable development outcomes, while presenting Nigeria as a gateway to Africa’s expanding market under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He highlighted opportunities in trade, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, healthcare, manufacturing and critical minerals.
Tinubu also called for deeper cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, fintech, telecommunications, cybersecurity, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing, stressing the importance of technology transfer, intellectual property and human-capital development. He said Nigeria’s youthful population remained a major asset to its innovation and economic transformation.
He added that Nigeria was ready to contribute to partnerships capable of creating jobs, expanding trade, strengthening productive capacity and building resilience against global shocks. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hosted the summit, said growing confidence in BRICS among Global South countries reflected the bloc’s commitment to cooperation, inclusive development and sustainable growth.
