The Anambra Government has established adolescent-friendly corners in six Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to improve young people’s access to confidential reproductive health information and quality healthcare services. The initiative covers facilities in Aguata, Ogbaru and Idemili South Local Government Areas.
Mrs Ifeoma Nwakpadolu, Officer-in-Charge of Adolescent Reproductive Health Programmes at the State Ministry of Health made the disclosure in Awka on Wednesday September 2.
Nwakpadolu said the spaces were created to address barriers that often discourage adolescents from using conventional healthcare facilities. The corners provide safe and welcoming environments where young people can discuss health, reproductive, psychosocial and developmental concerns without fear of stigma or discrimination.
The selected PHCs have been equipped with educational and recreational materials, including television sets, books, question-and-answer materials, brain games, Ludo, table tennis equipment and skipping ropes. Officials said the facilities are expected to encourage more adolescents to make PHCs their preferred point of contact when seeking healthcare.
The project is being implemented by the Ministry in collaboration with the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ASPHCDA) and Jhpiego, with funding from the Global Fund through the National AIDS and STIs Control Programme. Partners said the intervention currently supports six PHCs, with plans to expand to more facilities across the state.
