Uber has announced the discontinuation of its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria and Uganda, effective Wednesday, September 2, following a review of its business priorities and investment focus across Africa.
Uber’s Head of Communications for East and West Africa, Lorraine Onduru, said the decision was limited to the two countries and would not affect the company’s operations elsewhere in Africa. She said Uber remained committed to Sub-Saharan Africa and would support affected drivers, riders and employees during the transition.
Active drivers in Nigeria and Uganda will receive a token of appreciation as they leave the platform, while rider support will remain available for 21 days after operations cease. Uber for Business services in Nigeria will also be discontinued.
Onduru clarified that Uber’s decision to leave Nigeria was not connected to the recent FAAN directive on e-hailing operations at Nigerian airports, stressing that the exit was driven by the company’s broader review of its business priorities and investment strategy.
