The death toll from devastating floods in Nepal has risen to 1,127, according to police, a week after the disaster swept through parts of the country.
Police said only 95 recovered bodies had been handed over to families as of Wednesday morning, while more than 4,600 people remain missing. Many of the recovered remains are yet to be identified, but authorities say DNA analysis can help establish victims’ identities.
The catastrophic flash floods carried water, mud, ice and debris across affected areas, destroying homes and infrastructure. Experts believe a massive glacier collapse on the Tibetan side may have triggered the disaster.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned of possible disease outbreaks, saying overcrowded conditions among displaced people, flooding and stagnant water could increase the spread of infectious diseases.
