The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has mourned the death of its General Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Ugboaja, describing him as a formidable labour leader whose contributions left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s workers’ movement.
In a communiqué issued after its National Executive Council meeting in Enugu, NLC President Joe Ajaero said Ugboaja died in the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 22, after a protracted illness. He described the late unionist as a respected leader, skilled negotiator and strong advocate for workers’ rights and social justice.
Ajaero recalled Ugboaja’s participation in the 2005 National Political Reform Conference and the 2014 National Conference, where he represented workers’ interests. He also highlighted his legal expertise, strategic contributions to trade unionism and commitment to international working-class solidarity.
The NLC president said the Congress was working with Ugboaja’s family to give him a befitting farewell. He urged workers and affiliated unions to remain committed to the principles of equity, fair play and justice, saying the labour movement had lost a “titan” whose legacy would continue to inspire the struggle for workers’ rights.
