The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested three suspected illegal sand miners and impounded two tippers during a raid at Obiaja River in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The State Commandant, Mr Olatunde Maku, disclosed this on Thursday in Awka, saying the suspects were arrested by the command’s Mines and Steel Development Unit in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.

Maku said the operation followed credible intelligence on illegal mining activities along Nnobi-Ideni Junction, Uke Road. He said the suspects were allegedly extracting sharp sand from the river without authorisation or legal documentation. Two tippers, six shovels and a wheelbarrow were recovered during the operation.

The commandant said the suspects would be charged to court after investigations are concluded. He warned illegal miners to desist from activities that violate environmental laws, while urging residents to report suspected illegal mining operations to the NSCDC for prompt action.
