Nigeria and Bangladesh are moving to strengthen bilateral defence and maritime security cooperation, with both countries exploring practical areas of collaboration to improve naval capacity and address emerging maritime threats.
The Bangladesh High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Mainul Kabir, reaffirmed his country’s commitment during a high-level meeting with the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, in Abuja. Discussions focused on maritime security, professional training, technology exchange, naval shipbuilding and defence-industrial development.
Abbas highlighted Nigeria’s operational experience in tackling piracy and other maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea, noting that this could provide opportunities for professional exchanges and shared learning. He also stressed the need for stronger cooperation among regional navies to confront maritime threats that cross national borders.
The Chief of Naval Staff further expressed Nigeria’s interest in learning from Bangladesh’s garment manufacturing industry to support local production of military uniforms. The meeting underscored the commitment of both countries to strengthening maritime security, developing technical expertise, promoting indigenous defence industries and advancing mutually beneficial bilateral relations.
