Global music stars Celine Dion, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift have joined millions of fans in mourning legendary country music singer, songwriter and actress Dolly Parton, who died at the age of 80.
Parton’s family announced her death on Tuesday, prompting tributes from leading figures in music and entertainment. Dion described the late singer as a source of light whose music, humour and generosity touched millions of lives.
Taylor Swift said a world without Parton did not feel possible, praising her for the countless lives she changed and the encouragement she gave people to remain true to themselves. Beyoncé, who collaborated with Parton on her 2024 country album Cowboy Carter, described the late icon as a “north star” and praised her artistry, generosity, humour and entrepreneurial spirit.
Parton rose from poverty in Tennessee to become one of country music’s most celebrated figures, with a career spanning more than six decades. She wrote more than 3,000 songs, sold over 100 million records worldwide and won 11 Grammy Awards.
Beyond music, Parton enjoyed a successful acting career, starring in films including 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Steel Magnolias. She was also renowned for her philanthropy, particularly through the Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library, which has provided millions of free books to children.
Parton’s legacy also includes support for education, medical research, disaster relief and community development. In 2022, she received the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy, further recognising her contribution to charitable causes.
