President Bola Tinubu has condoled with the family, colleagues and admirers of veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, describing his death as a major loss to Nigeria’s creative industry.
In a condolence message issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said Ogogo’s decades-long career made significant contributions to Yoruba-language theatre and Nigerian cinema. He praised the actor’s distinctive style, screen presence and commitment to promoting Yoruba culture.
The President said Ogogo’s body of work would remain an important part of Nigeria’s cultural history, while his mentorship of younger artistes further strengthened his legacy. He urged members of the creative industry to preserve and build on the cultural values and artistic traditions to which the late actor devoted his career.
Ogogo began acting in 1981 while working as a mechanic with the Ogun State Water Corporation. After about 13 years, he left the job in 1994 to pursue acting full-time and subsequently became one of the prominent figures in Yoruba cinema.
The veteran actor was laid to rest on Monday at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion in Ilaro, Ogun State, following the Janazah prayer. Family members, friends, colleagues, political leaders and other well-wishers attended the burial to pay their final respects.
Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of Ogogo’s soul and for strength for his family and loved ones.
