Listen

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday to allow Muslim faithful across Nigeria to celebrate Eid-ul-Mawlid, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday in a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, on Friday in Abuja.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and the diaspora and urged them to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and progress in the country. He said the celebration should also encourage reflection on values such as compassion, humility and service to others.

The minister called on Nigerians to celebrate responsibly, with restraint and mutual respect, stressing that national unity remains a shared responsibility.

He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace across the country.
