The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar, has urged Nigerians to embrace unity, kindness and collective action in strengthening humanitarian response across the country.
Umar made the call in a statement on Wednesday to mark the 2026 World Humanitarian Day, themed “Act for Humanity.” She commended first responders, volunteers and other Nigerians who risk their lives to provide assistance to people affected by disasters and emergencies.
She urged citizens to demonstrate humanity through everyday actions, including checking on neighbours, sharing safety information and supporting communities recovering from crises. According to her, small acts of kindness and collective responsibility can help build stronger and more resilient communities.
Umar reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to disaster preparedness, risk management and rapid response to protect lives and livelihoods. She stressed that proactive measures remained essential to effective humanitarian intervention and the protection of vulnerable people.
World Humanitarian Day is observed annually on Aug. 19 to honour humanitarian workers and highlight efforts to protect the survival, wellbeing and dignity of people affected by crises.
