Listen

Chairmen of Lagos Mainland Local Government and Iru-Victoria Island Local Council Development Area have felicitated traditional worshippers, rulers and residents as Lagos joins the 2026 Isese Day celebration.

The chairmen, Mr Jabrel Emilagba and Mrs Oluwakemi Alabi, described Isese Day as an important occasion for preserving Yoruba culture, history, traditions and identity. The Lagos State Government declared Thursday a work-free day to enable residents participate in the celebration.

Alabi congratulated the Oniru of Iru Kingdom, Oba Omogbolahan Lawal, the Onisiwo of Onisiwo Kingdom, Oba Adio Yusuf, as well as chiefs, community leaders and residents of Iru-Victoria Island. She said this year’s theme, “Return of the Deities (Ìpadàbọ̀ Àwọn Irúmọ̀lè),” offered an opportunity to reconnect with cultural roots and strengthen values that promote unity, peace and community development.

She reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to working with traditional institutions and community leaders to promote people-centred governance and sustainable development. Alabi also urged young people to embrace and preserve Yoruba cultural values while promoting peace, respect and unity.

Emilagba, on his part, said he was pleased to join residents of Lagos Mainland, Nigerians and people in the diaspora in celebrating Isese Day. He stressed the importance of preserving indigenous heritage for future generations and said his administration would support initiatives that strengthen cultural identity and community bonds.

He prayed for peace, prosperity and progress for communities across Lagos Mainland and the state, urging residents to celebrate their heritage while maintaining peaceful coexistence.
