The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has partnered with the National Union of Dispatch Riders and Mail Operators of Nigeria (NUDRMON) to identify and tackle criminal elements operating as dispatch riders in Abuja.
The Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Transportation Secretariat, Mr Chinedum Elechi, announced the partnership on Wednesday during a meeting with union members. He said the initiative followed the creation of a membership database, online portal and identification numbers to distinguish legitimate riders from unidentified operators.
Elechi said some unidentified riders had been found operating within the FCT with suspected illegal items concealed in their delivery boxes. He commended the union for developing a verifiable identification system, saying it would enable authorities to isolate bad actors without unfairly targeting genuine riders.
NUDRMON National President, Mr Emmanuel Kwaghdega, said the initiative was designed around the principle of “one ride, one identity and one verifiable body number.” He said reliable data would improve security, accountability and public confidence while supporting accident and welfare interventions and helping authorities address regulatory challenges.
Kwaghdega urged the FCTA to take ownership of the initiative and work with the union to make it a joint solution to transportation and security challenges in the territory. Elechi assured the union of the FCT Administration’s support, stressing that effective collaboration would help government protect genuine riders and deal with criminal operators.
