Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated 16-year-old Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson on his historic gold medal victory at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos.
Esiovwa-Thompson, an indigene of Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area, Delta state, made history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s Under-23 epee event at the championship.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, Oborevwori described the achievement as a source of pride for Delta and Nigeria. He praised the teenager’s talent, determination and composure after he defeated three Indian opponents on his way to the final.
Esiovwa-Thompson, competing for Nigeria for the first time after switching allegiance from England, defeated South Africa’s Mathobela 15-7 before overcoming an Indian opponent 15-2 in the quarter-final. He then beat India’s Ashwini Shaurya 15-11 in the semi-final.
In the final, the young fencer produced a commanding 15-5 victory over Asian champion Lokesh Verma of India to claim the historic gold medal. Oborevwori also commended his family, coaches and others who contributed to his development.
The governor assured that his administration would continue supporting youth development and sporting excellence, saying achievements such as Esiovwa-Thompson’s could inspire more young people in Delta State to pursue their ambitions.
