Nigeria’s Joy Lawrence and Ifechukwu Odoh made an impressive start to their campaign at the Beach Volleyball Youth Development Championship in Saly, Senegal, recording two victories on Monday.

Competing in the Under-18 category, the Nigerian duo defeated Gambia 2-0, winning 21-9 and 21-13 in their opening match before overcoming Cape Verde 2-0 with convincing 21-7 and 21-3 victories.

The results put Lawrence and Odoh in a strong position as they continue their campaign at the championship, which brings together emerging beach volleyball talents from several African countries.

Nigeria’s coach, John Iwerima, said the team’s target was to gain valuable international experience while representing the country positively. He added that the competition would expose the young athletes to quality opposition and help improve their technical abilities.

“Our target is to make Nigeria proud and gain valuable experience that will help us at the Youth Olympic Games,” Iwerima said.

The championship began on Aug. 8 and is scheduled to end on Aug. 14, with Nigeria hoping to build on its impressive opening-day performance.
