The Delta State Government has commenced an assessment of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the state to evaluate service delivery and identify areas requiring further improvement.
The exercise, which began on Monday, is being conducted by the Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency in partnership with the IMPACT Project across the state’s 25 Local Government Areas.
The Federal Government-backed IMPACT Project, implemented through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, focuses on strengthening primary healthcare services, particularly maternal and child health, immunisation and malaria control.
Health workers at some of the facilities visited commended the intervention, citing improved infrastructure, modern medical equipment, essential drugs, delivery kits and increased support for healthcare services.
At Umuagu PHC, the Officer-in-Charge, Mrs Angele Ossai, said the facility had benefited from the construction of a laboratory, provision of staff quarters and renovation works. At Okpanam PHC, Mrs Yemi Okaka said the project had also provided operational funds and volunteer health workers.
The Officer-in-Charge of Model PHC, Asaba, Mrs Isioma Eboigbe, said the introduction of free maternal and delivery services had contributed to a 70 per cent increase in facility-based deliveries, as more women sought skilled healthcare during childbirth.
