The Amateur Basketball Academies (ABA) has urged basketball coaches in Taraba State to work together and prioritise grassroots development to unlock the potential of young players.
The Chairman of the Taraba Basketball Association and member of the state House of Assembly, Tanko Yusuf, made the call during a two-day coaching clinic in Jalingo. He said the state had talented coaches, players and referees capable of competing at national and international levels.
Yusuf urged coaches to embrace modern coaching methods, share knowledge and create more opportunities for young players to develop their skills. He stressed that unity, continuous learning and investment in coaches and players were essential to making Taraba a major basketball hub.
The President and Founder of ABA, Deputy Comptroller Aliyu Abubakar of the Nigeria Customs Service, urged participants to embrace the clinic’s theme, “DRIVE” — diligence, respect, inspiration, value and education. He described coaches as teachers, mentors and role models responsible for shaping the future of young athletes beyond the basketball court.
Declaring the clinic open, Chairman of the Taraba State Sports Development Commission, Coach Bulus Hussaini, pledged the state government’s support for basketball stakeholders and urged participants to apply the knowledge gained to improve the sport in the state.
Twenty-five coaches from basketball academies are participating in the clinic, which covers coaching ethics, player development, coach-player relationships and other areas designed to strengthen coaching capacity and nurture grassroots talent.
