The Kano State Government has conducted a mass wedding for 1,500 couples as part of an initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable residents, strengthening families and easing the financial burden of marriage.
The symbolic ceremony, held at the Emir’s Palace in Kano on Friday, was presided over by the state Chief Imam, Prof. Sani Zahradeen, with Governor Abba Yusuf representing the grooms and Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II representing the brides. The remaining couples were joined in matrimony simultaneously across their respective local government areas.
Among the beneficiaries was Haruna Bashir, who lost his wife and six children in a gruesome murder several months ago. As part of the government’s support, Bashir was provided with a house in Amana City, sponsored to perform Hajj and lesser Hajj, and married to his new wife, Rahinatu Jamilu-Yunusa.
Kano Hisbah Board Commander-General, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim-Daurawa, said the intervention had helped Bashir begin rebuilding his life after the devastating loss. Governor Yusuf described the mass wedding as a social intervention designed to restore hope, promote family values and support citizens who might otherwise struggle with the cost of marriage.
Each bride will receive 200,000 naira for dowry and start-up capital for a small business, alongside household items including a bed and mattress, blankets, bedsheets and a centre rug. The couples also received guidance from Islamic scholars and professionals on marital responsibilities, conflict resolution and building peaceful homes.
