A Neurosurgeon at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola, Dr Zayum Loda’am, has urged parents to seek early diagnosis and treatment for hydrocephalus, warning that delayed medical intervention could lead to permanent disability or death. He described hydrocephalus as the abnormal build-up of fluid in the brain caused by blockage, excessive production or poor absorption of cerebrospinal fluid.
Loda’am explained that hydrocephalus could be congenital or acquired, with causes including birth defects, brain tumours, meningitis, traumatic brain injuries and bleeding within the brain. He said newborns often present with an unusually enlarged head, poor growth and difficulty looking upward, while older children and adults may experience persistent headaches, seizures, vomiting and vision problems.
According to the specialist, the primary treatment is surgery to drain excess fluid through a shunt while addressing the underlying cause. He noted that shunt procedures have success rates exceeding 80 per cent in many cases but require regular follow-up to prevent infections and ensure proper functioning. He also said some cases could be prevented through prompt treatment of meningitis, safe delivery practices and the use of folic acid before conception.
Loda’am warned that untreated hydrocephalus could result in intellectual disability, epilepsy, blindness and other lifelong complications. He also dismissed myths linking the condition to witchcraft or evil spirits, urging parents to seek immediate medical care if they notice warning signs, as early diagnosis and treatment greatly improve outcomes.
